        How to Stain a Wood Floor

        Applying a stain to hardwood floors is a great way to give them beautiful color and tone. Follow these steps to stain your wood floors.

        Step 1: Prepare Floors

        Sand the floors completely and remove all sawdust.

        Step 2: Test the Stain

        Test the stain in an inconspicuous area of the floor or on a sample piece of wood before applying it to the entire floor.

        Step 3: Apply Stain

        Apply the stain with a rag or an applicator. Make sure it is applied evenly and watch for drips and pooling. Allow to dry completely per the stain’s instructions.

        Step 4: Add Protective Coating

        The stain only adds color or tone to the wood but does not protect the wood. Add a layer of polyurethane or another protection over the finished stain. Allow to dry.

        Step 5: Let Dry

        Allow everything to set and dry completely before adding furniture or rugs into the space.
